today i'm green, we'll see about tomorrow.

on the today show this morning, there was a piece about plastics in the ocean. so basically, plastic companies have gotten so good at what they do in manufacturing indestructible plastics, that they literally are indestructible. which is good and fine and their mission statements. the problem is that people aren't being responsible with these plastics and instead of recycling them, as they should and is suggested by the manufacturers, they are just disposing them like trash or not at all. so then, we find ourselves in the ocean and the swirl of natural ocean currents. these currents all land in the same places, and also, all these plastics arrive in the same places. there's parts of the ocean that have higher plastic content than plankton, etc. but what actually got my attention was that in Hawaii on the big island, there's actually beaches where tiny pieces of plastic make up the sand dunes. that's awful. it just swirls up onto the beach, and not much can be done about it. i think this is really sad, and only for selfish reasons, i don't really want beaches to be tainted. i know vow to be a full time recycler. yesterday, i was only a part time recycler. but i will still drive my vehicle, and use non efficient light bulbs until i see a real reason at a personal level that makes me do otherwise.
